OpenSolver
Desktop Excel VBA add-in from Andrew Mason and students in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Auckland (later development by Jack Dunn at MIT) that extends Excel's built-in Solver with more powerful open-source solvers. Vendor pages call it OpenSolver for Excel / the Open Source Optimization Solver for Excel. This listing is the desktop Excel add-in (OpenSolver.xlam) — not OpenSolver for Google Sheets, and not SolverStudio (a separate free Excel modelling tool). Default Linear build uses the COIN-OR CBC engine for linear and integer programmes, with optional Gurobi if you have a license; an experimental Advanced (non-linear) zip adds extra solvers and NEOS cloud solving and is not listed separately. Compatible with existing Excel Solver models; no artificial limits on variables or constraints beyond machine memory. Includes a model visualizer that highlights decision variables, objective, and constraints on the sheet, a QuickSolve mode for re-solving after right-hand-side changes, and a VBA API (RunOpenSolver). Install: download the Linear zip from SourceForge (Windows or Mac selected automatically from opensolver.org/installing-opensolver), on Windows right-click the zip → Properties → Unblock (required since the July 2016 Office security update), extract so OpenSolver.xlam stays with all files and subfolders, then double-click OpenSolver.xlam and enable macros. Commands appear under Excel's Data tab on Windows or the Menu Bar on Mac. Session-only until you check About OpenSolver → Load OpenSolver when Excel starts, or copy files into the Excel add-ins folder. Current stable Linear release OpenSolver 2.9.3 (1 Mar 2020; Gurobi 9.0 support): OpenSolver2.9.3_LinearWin.zip 4,967,716 bytes last-modified 17 Dec 2020; OpenSolver2.9.3_LinearMac.zip 16,036,940 bytes last-modified 17 Dec 2020. OpenSolver 2.9.4 Beta (15 Jan 2021) is also offered from the SourceForge files page. Windows: vendor says Excel 2007 and later; tested on 32- and 64-bit Windows 7/10 with Excel 2010/2013/2016. Help (updated July 2025) documents current Microsoft 365 desktop (confirmed on Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise Version 2507 Build 16.0.19029.20136 64-bit, 12 Aug 2025) if ActiveX/RefEdit is enabled in Trust Center; avoid NOMAD and the About OpenSolver dialog on those 2025 Excel builds or Excel can crash. Not Excel on the web and not Windows Store Excel (Click-to-Run / desktop install required). Mac: Excel for Mac 2011 on OS X newer than 10.7; limited Excel 2016 for Mac (need at least 15.28, then run Solvers/osx/OpenSolver Solvers.pkg). Vendor reports Excel 16.16.7 (late 2018) broke Mac support; a user reported High Sierra + Excel 16.24 worked and Mojave did not. Free and open source under the GPL; no paid license. Publisher asks users to donate to COIN-OR. Winner of the 2011 INFORMS COIN-OR Cup. Satalia SolveEngine is no longer available.
